Collection: Selma Calheira

Selma Calheira is a Brazilian ceramist based in Ibirataia, Bahia. In the 1950s, at the age of 38, she founded her own ceramics studio and called it Cores da Terra – Colors of the Earth. Calheira chose this name because it reflects one of her core values, namely making sustainable art

Another core value of the artist is social responsibility, as she trains people in Bahia to become professional ceramists at Cores da Terra. In this sense, it actively helps the local community to thrive by providing jobs that enable families to live and work in their own towns. In 1996, Calheira was even awarded the Gente que Faz prize for her work with economically disadvantaged people in one of the poorest areas of Brazil.

Selma Calheira's work is playful yet sophisticated. Their designs are made from organic resources such as clay and natural pigments.
