Bronze sculpture "Edge Stool (Brown)" by Manfred Kielnhofer

Manfred Kielnhofer's seated versions of his "Guardians of Time" emphasize, even more than the meditatively squatting figures on the floor, the power he ascribes to them within the framework of his artistic concept. The edge-sitters are life-size and thus confront the viewer as stern observers of human proportions, practically at eye level. This seated version of the Guardian had its most spectacular appearance, incidentally, during the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall: For this occasion, the sculptures "occupied" the remaining section of the Berlin Wall in Friedrichshain, which was designed by various contemporary artists and is internationally known as the "East Side Gallery." Their warning to the cheering and celebrating visitors: The Wall may have disappeared everywhere else, but your responsibility for the past and the future has not.
